The police is gathering evidence needed to confiscate properties worth Rs 3000 million of a heroin smuggler. The smuggler, Wasantha Mendis, is a resident of Katubedda and is said to be distributing heroin to the Middle East and Africa as well as Sri Lanka.

He has been using a car sale as a front for his drug distribution operation for the last 10 years. However he has sold only 150 vehicles in that period. After recent revelations about drug operations in Sri Lanka Mendis has fled to Thailand with his wife and child.

He is also the owner of the biggest building in the Southern Province, a 12 story building worth Rs 1300 million. He has been smuggling heroin from India and Pakistan via boats and it is said that he brings 500 kilos of heroin each time.
